Newport Beach: Wish you were here!
After a 20-year hiatus, Thomas returned to oil painting several years ago when he received commissions to paint his favorite subject, the ocean and coastline. These two canvasses re-create photos taken while fishing in the Newport Bay in California. The two photos that create the panoramic view from the Bay when heading out to sea along Corona del Mar are the inspiration for the two canvasses that capture that view. Filled with exact details of this scene, Thomas added only one object from his memory—the sailboat “Aries T” that is a replica of his boat in England. A lover of natural beauty, Thomas appreciates both the natural beauty of the beach and tide pools as well as the impressive homes along the shore cliffs. Living at the beach, whether in a new mansion or an old home in need of renovation, it seems to him impossible for anyone to be miserable.

Beauty Romance Love Montage
Thomas fell I love with this scene. He loves pelicans, the view and the yucca flowers. He had never seen the yucca bloom, as up close each flower looks like an orchid. The water is crystal clear, and the beach is breath-taking, especially on the far right side where there are rarely visitors.
He puts oil on canvas to bring out the colors, to really make it come to life.
The painting is made up of three canvases, with a total measurement of 6' wide by 4' high, and the original is selling for $60,000, with limited editions that cost $20,000.
The Predators
Thomas loves the sea, and "The Predators" melded several images reminiscent of a tropical isle into this painting. The jungle and distant volcano offer a complete change of scenery. He hopes it will serve as a happy reminder of time spent in a natural setting such as this. While many think of the restful relaxation of time spent in a tropical climate, Thomas is keenly aware that nature continues as it always has and must, with survival depending on victory in fierce competition. This can be seen even in the most serene setting. Witness the cormorant with its prize red snapper in his beak. But it is actually the seemingly harmlessly seagulls who are the opportunists here. They will work together to ambush the cormorant and pinch the red snapper.

“Sanctuary”
Thomas’ inspiration for these paintings began on a fishing trip off Ensenada, Mexico, and took 4 years to come to fruition. When he first saw these rock formations 5 miles out from the coast, he was struck by the sight of the light green algae that covers them. In the sunlight, the scene is breathtaking. Over several years, Thomas returned for more fishing, always taking a diversion to circle the rocks, trying to get the camera shots he wanted of both the bull seals and cormorants and the bright green algae. Getting the boat close enough to the rocks posed some danger, and some years the weather or the ocean did not cooperate. When he finally got the shot he wanted, it captured the color of spring bursting into bloom against the rocks. And more importantly, it captured the seals and cormorants on the back side of the island. These animals use these rock formations as their sanctuaries out at sea. Thomas never takes nature for granted, and inspired by its magnificence, he created these paintings in order to give others a lasting image to imprint on their minds.
A world-renowned art director and interior designer, Mr. Wells created a special oil painting of the Balboa Peninsula in Southern California to raise awareness about cancer. Mr. Wells, a cancer survivor himself, felt compelled to do something to help the financially disadvantaged people of Orange County, so he came up with the idea of Give Back Day. Every Monday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., MITC serves the community by giving FREE hair care and skin care treatments to cancer patients who cannot afford to pay for these specialized services.

"Corona del Mar"
Thomas Wells is a lover of the beach and all things of the ocean. His first reaction upon seeing the house on the cliff with its magnificent view and stairway down to the sand was “How could you possibly be miserable living here?” The many coves of Corona del Mar offer the curious close-up views as well, of the plentiful sea life that thrives among the rocks along the shore. Thomas paints in hopes of enticing city dwellers to explore the natural beauty of the ocean with their children, that they might foster an appreciation of nature and become its caretakers.
